About Bohri Cupid
A brother, a sister, and an app for our community
Bohri Cupid is a matrimonial app for Dawoodi Bohras looking for marriage. I'm Abbas Vajihi. My sister Sakina and I built the first version in our family's living room and launched it in 2023. Our mother still reviews new profiles herself. We're a family business, and the only people we answer to are our community.
Why I built it
I watched my sister and her friends try to find matches the conventional way, and I watched how hard it was. Taarufs and the aunties who know every family in the Jamaat have kept our community together for generations. But our community doesn't live in one place any more. A promising rishta can mean a flight to another country for one short meeting, with everyone watching how it goes. And if you live far from a big Jamaat, there often isn't a network to lean on at all.
I spent eight years in the US, studying and then working in product management. I knew what Bohras far from home were missing, because I was one of them. What we needed wasn't another dating app.

The moment we'll never forget
Mombasa, 2026
For years, Sakina and I wanted to show Aqa Moula the work we were doing. Sakina made call after call until the opportunity came, in Mombasa. We brought printed sheets of our success stories: the 100 nikahs of 2025.
It was meant to be a brief moment, everyone doing salam as Moula moved from one person to the next. I found myself with almost two minutes. Aqa Moula gave us his time, and took the time to connect us with people who care about this work. We came home surer than ever that this is the right thing to be doing.
I should be honest about something
I run a matrimonial app, and I'm still single. My sister is divorced.
People find that funny, and honestly, so do we. But it's also the reason we take this so seriously. We're not building for some imagined user. We're building for ourselves, our cousins and our friends. Sakina knows what it's like to start again in a community where everyone came to your wedding. I know what it's like to keep looking. Every decision we make about the app, we make as members first.
The first Bohri Cupid love story
Where we come from
Long before there was an app, there were our parents. Our father, Feroz, grew up in an orthodox household in Nagpada and moved to Dubai at 18. Our mother, Nisreen, was a fashion designer from a more progressive family in Mazgaon. Two very different upbringings, the Arabian Sea between them, and none of the instant messaging we take for granted. They made it work. In our family, we call them the first Bohri Cupid love story.
Our family's idea of service goes back further. Our grandfather, father and uncle helped build Al Masjid Al Husami in Madanpura.

I studied information systems and entrepreneurship at the University of Minnesota, then worked in product management in payments in the US. I lead the product: what we build, how it works, and how we keep it safe.

Sakina is a luxury business consultant. She leads our marketing and partnerships, and she's the reason most of our big moments happened, because she's the one who makes the calls. She also uses the app herself.

In a community this connected, one wrongful rejection travels faster than any advert. So we'd rather be careful than fast.
A person reviews every profile
Before it goes live. Around 70% are approved. Only genuine Dawoodi Bohras, no exceptions.
Members verify who they are
A selfie, a photo in topi or rida, and a government ID. You don't need an ITS card.
Privacy like family
Women can blur their photos and hide their name, and nobody can screenshot a profile.
Both of you have to say yes
Conversations start only when you both like each other.
Aunty Intelligence
Our AI assistant suggests conversation starters and profile tips. It suggests, and you decide.

When we reached 100 nikahs, we went to Shabbir's Tawakkal in Bohri Mohalla and handed out mithai to strangers. In September 2026, the Sunday Mumbai Mirror told our family's story in "Love within the fold". We've hosted meetups in Mombasa, Nairobi, New York, San Francisco, Dubai, Singapore and Mumbai.
