Why we built Bohri Cupid

For generations, Dawoodi Bohra matchmaking has run on taarufs and on the aunties who seem to know every family in the Jamaat. That network kept our heritage intact, and it still matters. But the world our community lives in has changed.

Singles now live across India, the Gulf, East Africa, the UK and North America. A promising rishta can mean a flight for a single short meeting, with a lot of pressure riding on it. And for Bohras far from a large Jamaat, there often isn't a network to lean on at all.

Abbas Vajihi saw this up close. "I saw my sister and other female friends struggle to find matches the conventional way," he told the Mumbai Mirror. After eight years studying and working in the US, he and his sister Sakina built the first version of Bohri Cupid themselves, in their living room. It launched in 2023.

The idea was simple: a trusted, private space for one community, for people who want to get married. As Abbas puts it: "Instead of writing your biodata and giving it to the aunties, you type your biodata into the app after you download it."

The first Bohri Cupid love story

Long before there was an app, there was Feroz and Nisreen. Feroz grew up in an orthodox household in Nagpada and moved to Dubai at 18. Nisreen, a luxury fashion designer, grew up in a more progressive family in Mazgaon. Two very different upbringings, the Arabian Sea between them, and none of the instant communication we take for granted today. They made it work.

Their children turned that lesson into a platform. Today, Nisreen reviews new profiles on Bohri Cupid herself. The Mumbai Mirror called her "the aunty with super powers".

The family's sense of service goes back further still. Abbas and Sakina's grandfather, father and uncle helped build Al Masjid Al Husami in Madanpura. "That project was a huge piece of khidmat for our community," says Sakina. "What we're doing feels like our own small way of carrying that legacy forward."

How Bohri Cupid works

1. Create your profile. Add your photos, your background and what you're looking for. Every member confirms they're single and looking for a serious relationship leading to marriage.

2. Get verified. Take a selfie in the app, and add a photo of yourself in topi or rida and a government ID. Each one adds to your verification score, out of 100.

3. Wait for review. A person reviews every profile before it reaches Discover. Only genuine Dawoodi Bohras, no exceptions.

4. Discover. Each day you see a set of profiles that fit your filters. Like the ones you'd like to know, and pass on the rest.

5. Match and talk. When you both like each other, a chat opens. Take it at your own pace.

What makes Bohri Cupid different
